  • Scheduled appointments are for issues that do not require immediate intervention, like preventive care. For example, STI screening, birth control consultation, medication refills, Pap smears, and lab draws would be seen as a scheduled appointment.
  • Walk-in appointments are reserved for students who need to be seen for acute illnesses, injuries, or emergency contraception. Walk-in hours vary depending on the day and provider availability. They are also on a first come, first served basis. Walk-in appointments cannot be guaranteed, as these visits tend to run longer and often require additional testing and care due to the fact that they are limited to sick and injury based visits.

Medical Services provided include (but are not limited to):

  • Immunizations
  • TB Screening
  • Sick/Injury Visits
  • Birth Control Consultations
  • Pap Smears
  • Free STI Screening
  • PEP/PrEP

All students can be seen at Emmons Wellness Center, regardless of insurance. Fee for service will be different depending on what medical insurance carrier you have. See our Cost of Visit page for more information.

If you have OSHIP, preventive visits such as contraception counseling, screenings, and immunizations are fully covered. Other office visits will have a copay of $10.

If you have private insurance, your insurance will be billed, but most likely the entire visit will not be covered. A visit typically ranges from $50-$120 with private insurance. See our Costs & Insurance page for more information.

STI Screenings are FREE for all º£½ÇÉçÇø Students, regardless of insurance.

There are local urgent care clinics that accept a variety of insurance (including OSHIP) and 24/7 Emergency Rooms. For after-hours medical care, please visit our list of off-campus providers.

You can also utilize the TimelyCare app or the 24/7 nurse line/advice line provided by most health insurance carriers. This phone number is usually found on the back of your health insurance card. Please see our list of off-campus resources.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency please call the 24/7 crisis support hotline at (323) 341-4141 or utilize TimelyCare.

Emmons Medical functions predominantly as a walk-in/urgent care clinic. We can treat most urgent care issues. Emmons providers may refer you to a higher level of care (Emergency Department or Urgent Care) if we cannot treat you at Emmons. If Emmons is closed, you can go to urgent care for non-emergency medical problems. If you are having a medical emergency, please go to the Emergency Department or call 911.

Here are the differences between the Emergency Department, Urgent Care, and Walk-in Clinics:

Emergency Department

Certain medical conditions are considered emergencies because they can require rapid or advanced treatments, including surgery, that are only available in a hospital setting.

Symptoms that are best evaluated in an emergency room include:

  • Chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • Weakness/numbness on one side
  • Slurred speech
  • Fainting/change in mental state
  • Serious burns
  • Head or eye injury
  • Concussion/confusion
  • Broken bones and dislocated joints
  • Fever with a rash
  • Seizures
  • Severe cuts that may require stitches
  • Facial lacerations
  • Severe cold or flu symptoms
  • Vaginal bleeding with pregnancy

Urgent Care

Urgent care is not emergency care. Urgent care centers are same-day clinics that can handle a variety of medical problems that need to be treated right away, but are not considered true emergencies. Urgent care offices sometimes have X-ray, lab and other diagnostic services on-site. They help free up emergency departments for the most serious medical cases.

Symptoms that can be evaluated and treated at an urgent care clinic include:

  • Fever without a rash
  • Vomiting or persistent diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Mild wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Dehydration
  • Moderate flu-like symptoms
  • Sprains and strains
  • Small cuts that may require stitches

Walk-in Clinics

Walk-in clinics are a good option for when you are not feeling well, but it’s not serious enough for the emergency room or urgent care.

Walk-in clinics address symptoms such as:

  • Painful urination
  • Rashes without fever
  • Mild flu-like symptoms
  • Cough and congestion symptoms
  • Sore throat
  • Ear pain
  • Eye redness, discharge or itchiness
