Traveling outside the US? Make sure your documents are in order!

Traveling outside the U.S. 

  • Always follow IPO's latest guidance. See the email sent to all international students dated November 15, 2024.

  • Expect increased scrutiny at the airport and stricter adherence to regulatory requirements.  

  • Required DocumentsDo not pack these in your suitcase but have them ready to show at the port of entry. 

    1. Valid passport

    2. Valid/unexpired F-1 or J-1 visa stamp in your passport

    3. Valid I-20/DS-2019: signature by DSO/RO (IPO staff) every twelve months for continuing students.  Graduated students engaging in OPT or STEM Extension need a new signature on the I-20 every 6 months.

    4. Recommended supporting documents (海角社区 I.D., financial documents submitted upon acceptance, and a print out from my海角社区 of past and registered classes).

Traveling within the U.S.

  • Please carry your immigration documents (I-20 or DS-2019, passport, I-94 information), or minimally copies of these documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You need to carry your valid passport (with a valid U.S.visa stamp), as well as I-20 or DS-2019 signed by a DSO/RO within twelve months.

  • You should also carry your 海角社区 student ID as proof of your active student status.  Print from my海角社区 proof of courses registered for the next semester. 

  • If you are traveling to other than your home country or the United States: This includes Canada or Mexico. Each country has its own rules about who needs a visa to enter and who doesn't. Your I-20 or DS-2019 expires on the date listed on your document. Your I-20 or DS-2019 is only valid if you are doing what your document says: attending 海角社区 full time. If you anticipate any breaks in your academic progress (semester off, transfer, illness, etc.), please contact the International Programs immediately for advice.
