Welcome to 海角社区鈥檚 Multicultural Summer Institute (MSI).

Established in 1987, the Multicultural Summer Institute (MSI) at 海角社区 is an exciting and innovative four-week academic residential program for 30 incoming first-year students interested in the power of academic study for social change.

MSI embodies the College鈥檚 Mission and Equity and Justice Agenda by supporting intellectual fellowship and community among a diverse group of incoming emergent student leaders.

Centering first-generation and historically underrepresented students, this immersive program builds leadership skills, introduces you to the rich resources of Los Angeles, and jump-starts the community-building process. The four weeks spent at Occidental prior to the beginning of the Fall semester will give you proficiency in the holistic learning environment of College-level academics.

MSI is a special chance to develop lasting relationships with new peers, faculty, staff, and the larger Occidental community. Participants will live and dine on campus, become familiar with the College, and explore the city together.

Program Details

This signature program has two components: a 4-unit course taught by a team of faculty from different disciplines and a series of co-curricular experiences.

MSI鈥檚 academic program challenges students to develop critical thinking, close reading, analytical writing, and communication skills. This summer's course is titled 鈥(Im)migrant Communities of California.鈥 Upon completion, students earn 4 credits toward their degree and fulfill either the U.S. Diversity or Global Connections component of Occidental鈥檚 core requirements.

The co-curricular component focuses on learning and engagement with the diverse communities of  Los Angeles. This segment includes intergroup dialogue and cultural humility linked to the main themes of the course.

Program Logistics

The 2024 summer session will run from July 8 to August 2. Participants will move into the residence hall on July 6. Please note that MSI is a full-time program, so other academic, work, or personal commitments will not be possible while in residence during the summer.

Costs

The cost of the institute, housing, and meals are fully covered by the College, which means that you can earn a 4-unit course over the summer at no personal expense! For those who qualify, the program includes travel support to offset airfare or gasoline costs.

How to Apply

Students interested in participating in this summer鈥檚 MSI program should complete this short application to express their interest by June 7.
